Critical Studies: Compare ‘The Brothers Quay’ with ‘Jan Svankmayer’

The Brothers Quay and Jan Svankmayer seem similar to me in the aspect that they both produce quite out of the ordinary work. The music portrayed in the brothers quay is in it's own way quite disturbing, begining slow and somwhat quiet giving the viewer mixed signals as to what might happen is just a way of saying something extremely out of the ordinary is about to take place; and it does, and to execute this the music gets faster, more disorientated but that's what complimets the characters actions so well. Whereas in the Jan Svankmayer film "food" music is not used much, it focuses more on the sound effects of machines, the sound of hitting a machine that has loose bolts in it and such. It works well because it gives you a familiar feeling whereas the Street of Crocodiles animation makes you feel uncomfortable and lures you through the animation with the charcaters, almost gripping you and taking you on a journey. One huge aspect that these two directors do not meet in similarity in is that Jan Svankmayers work is repetitive, and The Quoy brothers keep you watching till the very end, i have to say, its quite boring when you know what is going to happen next and it keeps repeating, because this becomes bothersome to the viewers, yet you keep watching because you are sure it can not possibly repeat again and something will happen this time, but no, it just repeats, i dont think this has a great effect on the audience, it will deffenitley be a memorable piece of work but it is not something that can compare to the work of the Quay brothers. Also the way the Quay brothers work with puppets and Svankmayer works to live size models is something the viewers can appreciate and feel like this is a video made with patience and much passion. It's like a piece of a puzzle taking you in to the artists mind, It's very clever.
