Critical Studies: The Brothers Quay

Although for me the work of The Quay brothers and Jan Svankmayer are both  a mystery to me and completely out of my comfort zone, the work they produce is very interesting. It takes the image of animation to a different level, once you open a Quay brtothers short film, the image of cute, funny, or even Disney image is tarnished from your brain, they take matters in to there own hands, they are producing films that only adults could understand and still possibly be frightened to watch. "Street of Crocodiles for example" when released in 1986, must have had such an effect on people, it is something they have never seen before, some will appreciat it, some will never understand it. An interesting quote i found about this short film is "If true art reaches even one person it has succeeded."It came to mind that, of course these animations are created for the people, every one wants there animation to be watched, recognized and of course apreicated, but when your working on a project such as this, your audience will not be very big, and so they are creating for that small amount of people who appreciate the depth of the Quay Brothers minds. The message they are trying to get across is something i can not understand just by watching one of there short films, in fact i have to go deep into research to understand what they are thinking and what the purpose behind there inspiration is.
Their work is dark and quite beautiful, in every set they build, with every prop the camera angles towards, you see the passion and hard work that goes in to every second of film.
